Homemade Treats
If your vet has recommended a very specific diet for allergies or GI issues, it can be frustrating to not be able to give commercial treats. As you know, it is very important for your pets to stay strictly on the prescribed diet, however there are ways you can make your own treats at home! This will allowing them to feel special and spoiled, and won’t make you feel as if you are depriving them of a treat.
If you are using a canned product, cut up some bite sized pieces for approximately 2.5 - 3 minutes, or until desired texture.
If you only have the dry kibble you can grind the pieces into flour using a blender and then mix with enough water to form dough. Shape into “cookies” (or cut out pieces with cookie cutters) and bake them on a cook sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 30 minutes (or until crispy).
Garlic powder (not salt) may be added in small amounts to enhance palatability. All homemade treats need to be stored in the refrigerator no longer than 5 to 7 days to maintain their freshness and prevent spoilage.
PLEASE NOTE: These Homemade treats SHOULD NOT exceed 5% of your pets’ total daily intake as baking the treats does alter the nutritional characteristics of the diet!
